Greg Hackney
Senior Principal and Director
Greg is a Geotechnical Engineer with over 30 years’ experience in the consulting engineering industry and a founding Director at EDG Consulting. He is a Chartered Professional Engineer, a Registered Professional Engineer in Qld and Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Australia. Greg obtained his BEng and MEngSci degrees at UNSW in 1995 and 2000 respectively. In 2015, Greg, together with Ian Shipway and Garth Powell founded EDG Consulting.
During his career, Greg has led teams from both technical and managerial perspectives, being involved in all manner of projects including dams, roads, slopes, bridges, ground treatments, buildings and deep excavations.
Greg’s areas of expertise include:
- Design management, focussing on the integration and collaboration of geotechnical design teams with civil and structural design disciplines to deliver project outcomes.
- Geomaterial assessment for use in engineering projects.
- Slope engineering and remedial works designs.
- Soft ground engineering.
- Earthworks.
- Temporary Works.
Greg has written or co-authored 18 technical papers on topics including geotechnical design, design parameters and risk assessment.
Notable major projects include:
- Inland Rail Gowrie to Kagaru PPP, where he led the tender design of the earthworks, cut slopes and embankments for the 130km long rail project.
- Cross River Rail, where he was part of the team to deliver geotechnical advice relating to support of excavations for the eight shafts and two dive structures.
- Sunshine Coast Airport Expansion Project where he led the design of temporary bunds for dredge spoil containment.
- Gateway Upgrade North and Kingsford Smith Drive projects where he provided temporary works design and review.
- Sarina Range Reconstruction Works where he led the design and provided review for remedial works following damage from Cyclone Debbie.
- Geotechnical Manager for the RangeConnect bid for the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing project from 2014 to 2015.
- Project Manager and Project Director for the emergency works and reconstruction works on the Warrego Highway - Toowoomba Range from 2011 to 2014.
- Project Director for the Gateway Upgrade Project 2007 to 2009.
- Design Manager for the Kapit Coffer Dam studies 2009 to 2010 and 2011 to 2013.
- Geotechnical Manager for the Port of Brisbane Motorway Upgrade ECI tender in 2010.
- Geotechnical Project Manager for the Shannon Creek Storage Facility dam embankment and access road in 2007.
- Project Manager for the landform construction and old landform evaluation studies for the Penrith Lakes Scheme from 2001 to 2003.
