John Holland is constructing the Sunshine Coast Airport Expansion Project at Marcoola. EDG has been providing geotechnical assistance to JH since the tender phase. Over 1Mm3 of sand was dredged onto the site for the runway embankment, and EDG designed the earthfill bunds for the 25ha sand receival area and 14 ha tailwater receival pond.
A large portion of the bunds were constructed over very soft clay, requiring detailed assessment of stability and settlement. The structure was listed as a regulated structure and had to achieve approval from the Qld Department of Environment and Science. EDG has continued involvement through construction, assisting JH with review of ground treatments, foundation assessment and temporary works designs.
